July 1998
The UCI-BMX World Championships were held in Melbourne Australia, 24-26 July.
There were 1274 entries from 24 countries. The track was built inside the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Centre ("The Glasshouse") in the Melbourne Sporting Precint. This is the first time the World Championships have been held indoor.
Reports indicate that the organisation of the event was not up to par with expectation. The venue was even changed at very late notice with the track itself being finished only a couple of days before the event. The indoor track design was incredibly tight with parts of it having to be ridden over twice (crossover). GT Bicycles was the major sponsor of the event.
Australia took home 16 world titles topping the overall medal tally with 16 Gold, 13 Silver and 15 Bronze. Rachel Marshall took out the Elite Women title (her 4th World Title).
