History - BMX Australia 1980
By 1980, the sport of BMX had taken off. Riders from all over the country were now enjoying regular race meetings. It was in 1980 that the first "Unofficial Australian Championships" were held and called the "Australian Age Championships". (Unofficial referring to the fact that the National Organising Body - ABMXA - had not yet formed.) The Championships were held over 4 rounds of racing, two events were held in Brisbane and two events were held in Sydney. The series was points based which resulted in a 1st place tie for the Open Mens title. Sydney-siders Michael Wiltshire and Wayne McIntosh were the first ever joint winners.
